İpek Duben
In the
series Traces (1990-91) and Register (1991-92) Duben’s lasting interest in the
the duality between Eastern and Western cultures which she has experienced as a
modern woman, finds expression here as she deconstructs the styles of Islamic
miniatures and Western Expressionism. She paints her nude body in
the tradition of Islamic miniatures: figure as pattern, not as form giving
definition to an indiviualized presence. The traces of her body float in a
dynamically painted space which support other decorative Islamic patterns. The
question is aesthetic and existential, “is synthesis possible?”
