Subterranean chambers of the ancient world hosted many chimera guardians, protecting thresholds upon entering or guiding souls to the afterlife. Here the double Sphinx represents guardianship and riddle or mystery. In their dual form they mimic one’s mirror within the Temenos, inviting contemplation and safekeeping secrets. Painting details reference Boticelli’s shell from The Birth of Venus as rebirth, Istanbul’s Maiden’s Tower for protection, the pearl for purification, and a sky anointed with double spiral and four pointed stars as cosmic sanctuary.
