Who is
Şerife? “… a house cleaner from an
Anatolian village, abandoned by her husband, migrated to İstanbul for her son’s
education.”
A series of
headless iconic images draws attention to women whose identities are repressed by the traditional norms of male
dominated societies where their presence and labor are deemed invisible. Şerife’s
identity is represented by her absence inside her dress. Her absence is her
signature. The Şerife series is the artist’s first body of work in which
she tackled issues of migration, perception of the “other,” gender and alienation.
