Untitled (2002) is concerned with the illusion and necessity of mental images and their pictorial representation. It borrows its conceptual framework from Walter Benjamin’s work on thinking-in-images (Bilddenken). The painting addresses the transformation of the “thought image” (Denkbild) and the “image desire” (Bildbegehren) into formal visual material. The work represents a veiled painting and is set to invite or provoke mental images to complement the reading of the concealed scene. It also implies the absence of the visual image and offers a ground for the materialisation of the “thought image” and “image desire”. In the continuity of these ideas, my work explores ways of visually distorting and representing realities, emphasising the role of one’s prior knowledge and observations in the perception of reality. Untitled (2002) can also be read as a form of institutional critique of the medium of painting and its contemporary manifestations.
