This painting is Jung’s idea of the physical manifestation of the Temenos which he described as a symmetrical rose garden with a fountain in the middle where one can safely enter the unconscious. The fountain is also symbolic within Turkish history, culture, and architecture. The drop of the sun in the center of the painting nods to the descent of consciousness into the Temenos space. In this Temenos garden, unconscious content can be brought into the light of consciousness. The roses and water flowing from the fountain offer a peaceful place where the notion of time is lost and limitations of normal life are abolished. Communion is the experiential activity that takes place within this garden.
