The series Where Are Those I Passed By and Passion for Distance present landscapes composed of stacked horizontal colour fields overlaid with
parallel lines drawn with ballpoint pen and ruler. These lines create a layer,
a filter that separates the viewer’s gaze from the landscape. Even if our eyes
do not consciously trace the lines from left to right or top to bottom, our
body memory registers the movement of their making, so we experience the
landscape as though passing by it. These scenes, familiar to us from train or
car windows, recall the need for introspection and reckoning with the past -a
need triggered by the disparity in speed between the inside and the outside,
and by the very act of moving forward. It is we who are moving forward, yet
Defne’s initial working title for the series playfully asked: “Is it us who are moving forward, or the landscape?” reminding us that perception is deceptive,
and that truth is relative.
