In Rome, the painter Cavaradossi and the singer Tosca struggle against the ruthless chief of police, Scarpia. After aiding an escaped prisoner, Cavaradossi is captured. Scarpia demands Tosca's affection in exchange for her lover's life. She kills Scarpia but arrives too late to save Cavaradossi, then leaps to her death.
