In the Arms of the Abyss is a ceramic wall piece that draws from a photograph the artist has seen from Kamokuna volcano in hawaii. In the original image, the cooled lava appeared as if bodies were melting into one another, flowing toward the mouth of the volcano—evoking the threshold of an underworld, or a gate to something unknowable. Reimagined as a ceramic wall piece, this fragment becomes a dark, swirling composition that suggests a center, a void, a mouth. Forms seem to dissolve and move inward, as if drawn into an unseen depth. The work reflects on the tension between fear and longing—an enchantment with the abyss, with nothingness, and a desire to be absorbed by it. It gestures toward an embrace of darkness, of death, and the possibility of integrating what lies beyond understanding.
