Whatever: Can Sayınlı, Jørgen Evil Ekvoll

Press release

Ever since Can Sayınlı and Jørgen Evil Ekvoll met in 2002, studying at Central SaintMartinsCollege, the brilliance of their minds has been bridging cultures in previously unheard of ways. Their retrospective, to be seen at Galerist in Istanbul on October 17th 2007, could either be perceived as flashes of a new reality or a milestone filling in the blanks that history missed out. In this dark mix of light, you will find yourselves in an environment of... Whatever

During the past two years, Jørgen and Can, London based Turkish-Norwegian artist duo, have been focusing on the production of hand-woven wool and silk rugs from the world famous Turkish district of Hereke. They have also been working with glass, marble and leather, as well as experimenting with computer generated art forms.

Through mixing modern technologies with traditional crafts, and modern crafts with poetry, they manipulate the sophisticated mediums in their reach. Though these mediums may vary from silk to lasers and their tools from hammers to pixels, their subjects merge elements from popular culture with crafts associated with traditions that remain distant to the Western world. This unique approach invites everyone to a new awareness and collaboration in a world craving a higher level of socio-cultural consciousness.
