Burcu Yağcıoğlu’s practice encompasses drawing, video, collage and painting. Her work explores the interrelations, shifts and influences between species, natures and fictions. Working with various systems of knowledge and visual representation such as gif animations, cookbooks and encyclopedias, she creates works that reflect on information flow, perceptions of nature and given cultural hierarchies.
Yağcıoğlu studied BA in painting at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and MA in Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design at Sabanci University. In 2008 she moved to London for an MFA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College, which she completed in 2010. Yağcıoğlu’s solo exhibitions have been held at Galerist, Istanbul (2018, 2016)); C.A.M Gallery, Istanbul (2013); Ever Spring Museum, Taichung, Taiwan (2011) and Artvarium, Elgiz Contemporary Art Museum, Istanbul (2007). Her works have been shown at the 5th Mardin Biennial (Mardin, 2022), Odunpazari Modern Museum (Eskişehir, 2023, 2020) Istanbul Modern (Istanbul, 2023, 2015, 2014), Sabancı Museum (Istanbul, 2015), Akbank Sanat (Istanbul, 2014); Tate Britain (London, 2014); Nesrin Esirtgen Collection (Istanbul, 2013); Kunsthaus Essen (Essen, 2012); The Woodmill (London, 2011); Center for Contemporary Arts, Glasgow (Glasgow, 2010); Core Gallery (London, 2010); 1st Sinopale (Sinop, 2006) and 12th European Young Artists Biennale (Naples, 2005). As a duo with Ulgen Semerci, she has participated at Bahar, the 13th Sharjah Biennial Offshoot in Istanbul (2017) and produced the exhibitions “In Fog” at Operation Room – American Hospital Gallery (Istanbul, 2015) and the studio exhibition “Flooded” (Istanbul, 2014).
Burcu Yağcıoğlu currently lives and works between London and Istanbul.
